Blix tricks! Blix tricks!
Apr. 24th, 2004 03:35 pmI decided I needed a politics-type icon since I ramble about those sorts of things often enough, and the resemblance is amusing enough. ;)
So, I went and saw Hans Blix speak here last night. There weren't a whole lot of shocking revelations, but there were some interesting things. Most surprising to me was that he was actually happy about the military buildup around Iraq during the inspections process because he thought it would make the Iraqi government cooperate. I think he underestimated how much people were pushing for an attack though, because he was annoyed with how they were claiming the inspections had failed after just 6 weeks of looking. I got the impression that he thought Cheney was the big instigator in favor of armed confrontation in the presidential camp. He was pretty easy on Bush through the whole lecture.
The most interesting part of the evening though, I think, was only tangentially related to the lecture. After the lecture, there were some audience-submitted questions. The last one, the moderator asked Blix, "Do you think that Iraq and the world in general are safer now?" Blix immediately said no, and then paused. During the pause, the audience erupted into applause.
...I think people are overestimating the closeness of the election in November.
Oh, and if you get the joke in the headline, you're either Amy or you've also watched old dorky cartoons that were on HBO in the 80's. <g>
