So, I saw Prisoner of Azkaban tonight. Looks like Cuaron didn't screw it up too bad. I love the new look. I thought I'd hate it, but it's not as bad as I thought it'd be. In fact, it's not really bad at all.

My main gripe this time around was that there was just too much cut. I don't know that people who haven't read the book would really get what was going on. I mean, in about 5 seconds, we get that Lupin's a werewolf, Sirius is innocent, Pettigrew is Scabbers, and everyone just gets on board with all this. At least in the book, there were like 10 pages covering it all, and nobody really believed them to begin with. Plus, the Marauders weren't even explained at all. Lupin just starts going off about how awesome and hot Harry's mom was and Harry's just like, "Yeah, okay then." (Rather than, "Oh, awesome! You knew them?" like he does in the book (which makes sense since he doesn't really know much about them and all).)

I'd be annoyed about there only being that one Quidditch match in there (although it's not like the others are really crucial to the plot), but at least Cuaron isn't being like Columbus with his really dumb "ooh, big action sequence! Add extra tension by making up random scary-looking moves for people to do!" matches. At least this means that probably if they do a fourth movie, Cho will have a much smaller role. The dementors bothered me at this part too because of the random chase scene. (They bothered me at other parts also, but I'm willing for them to behave differently. The random chase scene was a bit contrived though.)

I was really glad about the screenplay and direction differences, particularly the lack of Disney-ization. (Yes, I know it's a WB movie.)
Oh my, and the score. Thankyouthankyouthankyou, John Williams, for not beating Hedwig's Theme into our heads like you did with the last movie (and the first, to a lesser extent), and for holding back at least somewhat on the BIG SWEEPING PARTS. It helped lots.

I noticed the clock thing that they had going on really early on in the movie, but I was sitting there going, "What's with all the clocks?" and had completely tossed the time turner out of my head.

Was anyone else amused by Sirius at the end there? "Heigh-ho, Buckbeak! Away!"

The map at the end credits was really cute with the little silly jokes like the stinkbomb room, and Padfoot, and Lupin. Hee.
Super big tease there at the very end when it goes black and the music's done, there's a few seconds of black screen, and then there's just a little flourish of music. And then the reel ends.
Evil!

And now, I'm going to bed.
