Gettin' out of the house, gonna go for a ride...

So, 97's on Friday. Lots of fun, lots of wet. Amy, Sandra, and I headed out of CS at about 4, got to Bastrop with no issues, and stopped off at Subway for food, and then tried to hit up a Walgreens for cheapo basically-a-plastic-bag-with-prepunched-holes ponchos, but they only had more expensive ones that definitely wouldn't fit in pockets. So we continued on to Austin in the sunshine, went to Bookpeople for a bit, and then decided to skip looking harder for ponchos in favor of just going to the concert as it was still sunny out. We got there at about 7:30, and realized we had another hour to kill before the Small Stars came on. The Small Stars were a heck of a lot of fun. It's a side project of one (or two) of the guys from Fastball (along with some other people) where they kind of sort of are pretending to be a lounge band, which basically means they all dress up in silly outfits and occasionally have more directly humorous songs. I picked up their most recent album from CD Baby and am enjoying it quite a lot.

So the Small Stars head on off the stage and they start setting things up for the 97's who, according to the sheet Sandra saw when we came in, are supposed to start at 9:15. Guitars are going out, mics are getting plugged in, setlists are going out. And then when they're probably to about 5 minutes before the band's going on -- a guy in a white Stubb's poncho RUNS out onto stage with a huge sheet of plastic and starts trying to throw it over the stage left speaker stack. He is soon joined by others who cover the whole stage with plastic, along with the other stack. It starts to rain considerably. We were slightly under the awning, not that I think it helped much. We lament our lack of cheap-ass ponchos and try to huddle together to keep at least parts of our shirts dry (and also because everyone in the venue tried to push up to get under the awning, for what little it did). After about half an hour or so, a guy comes out on stage to tell everyone that the show was going to go on, they just had to wait for the storm to go by. We continued to wait as the rain slowed but lightning continued heavily.

The 97's eventually went on at 10:30, an hour or so after they were supposed to, and played as close to midnight as they probably felt they could while being less than a minute walk from the police station. This meant that the show was a bit rushed (literally -- apparently they had Phillip kick up the tempos so they could get more songs in) and it was basically all audibles, but it was still a hell of a lot of fun. Rhett was extra animated (Amy's impression was that he was drunk. This could also have been the case. As she pointed out, they did have an hour to kill) -- he did, at one point, honestly kiss Murry. (He was introducing "Indefinitely," saying that they hadn't played together in a while and this was the song that made him miss Murry the most. Murry retorted, "If you miss me, why won't you kiss me?" So he did, on the neck. There was much gigglyness and "not that there's anything wrong with that" that followed, naturally.) He also managed in the space of the time they were on stage to break 4 strings, so, trying to keep pace with a normal show.
They played mostly "hits" (things you hear at pretty much every 97's show) except they also threw in "Let the Train Blow the Whistle" for Murry to sing, which I don't think I'd heard before. They were so rushed for time that the encore was just Timebomb. (I was sad, no Rhett/Murry acoustic goodness.)

But overall a heck of a fun show, rain notwithstanding.

Today I didn't do a whole lot. Went to work and did paperwork. Came back and had some BBQ with Sandra before returning to Tivoed Amazing Race and Drive. Thank you to Fox for the 2 hours of Nathan Fillion on my birthday. It was much appreciated. (Drive looks to be another fluffy exciting fun as hell show and is going to be perfect for me paired on Monday with Heroes which falls into the exact same category. Yay for more TV to fill up my Tivo.)
