BSG rambling and stuff
Jeez. Like, freaking hell. People, watch BSG. I'm telling you, seriously.
Yay, they're using the UK theme now! I like that much better than the US one (probably since I watched the UK versions of the first season -- I didn't even notice it was the UK theme until I got online and saw people talking about it. I'd've noticed if it was the US theme. Kind of like how I don't really taste Dr. Pepper, I just notice if the soda I'm drinking isn't. But that may mean more that I just need to cut back on my soda intake). I'm a bit sad about the montage being gone though, particularly since it means that the theme just never really goes anywhere since we never kick into the drumming.
Very little with Baltar and Six in this episode. Baltar amuses me way too much. I noticed that he doesn't seem to be being followed by Six anymore, but by the CRIB OF DOOM. The look of sheer terror on his face on seeing it out in the woods nearly made me fall off my couch in laughter.
The reveal on the teaser was certainly a "Holy shit." moment. When Gaeta said, "No contacts," there after the jump, I thought it just meant enemy contacts, so I was sitting there going, "Oh, okay, so they've escaped that, and now we get to try to save Adama and let everyone figure out where they are now." But then they showed the screen completely blank and I gaped. I think my second thought was that Tigh is having a pretty recordbreakingly shitty day. ;)
I have no idea what's going on on Caprica. Why the heck would Boomer go off on her own? Starbuck and Helo are the only unknown variables in their whole setup there, why leave them alone together?
I liked the flashbacks on Tigh and Adama's past (even though the wigs and moustaches were a little...uh). And I really liked that detail on Tigh's character there. We now have an acting CO with a bit of a death wish and *no* desire to be commanding who is going to be trying to get Adama back into service probably the moment he stabilizes.
I'm beginning to be really convinced that the arrow that Roslin wants is something that has to do with Lee, not anything on Caprica. This would be kind of a lame twist if it were the only thing going on, fortunately that's not the case. Just the way Roslin was going on about how Lee needed to get out of jail so he could make sure that Starbuck gets back fine with the arrow, and the arrow's safety is paramount because she *needs* it to be able to show where Earth is, blah blah blah. The only thing that stops me from saying it is for certain is that everything else has been terribly literal (which is probably why Roslin isn't even thinking of Lee. That or she's starting to lose it, which is also quite possible.)
The robocylons at the end there actually surprised me. I was expecting a reveal of a new humanoid cylon model like at the end of the miniseries. I'm glad they didn't since "Who's going to discover the secret?" started getting mildly old last season.
Complaints:
-- The computer technobabble. It was pretty bad there. And if there are other systems outside of the three that were behind the "last firewall" (whatever), which I'm kind of assuming there'd have to be considering the diagram they had, a) aren't all of them networked then? Galactica doesn't have networks though, and I thought it was only those 3 computers. and b) isn't anything outside of those compromised? It's not like they can go to the store to get new computers or new software. I guess they must keep recent backups?
-- When they jumped back to the fleet, everyone else had been sitting there for hours. Couldn't any or all of them have been captured/infiltrated by Cylons? I mean, if you had to blow up the Olympic Carrier in 33, why not now? I guess they weren't left in an area where there were obviously Cylons like in 33, but Galactica has no way of knowing now that nothing happened to them.
And next week doesn't look any less crazy. Yipes.
I'll be nice and put some extra spoiler space at the bottom, since this won't be airing in Canada until January(!).
Okay, that's done.
And they showed a Firefly commercial during it! Glee!
I also happened to catch Stargate Atlantis tonight since I was eating food; this was the first episode I'd ever seen of the show. I was terribly amused that they had some random device called aZPD ZPM on there, which I think was named that just so the Canadian scientist guy could go on about the "Zed-Pee-Em". <g>
(I was also amused at myself for pegging that actor as either actually being Canadian or being very thorough in his language studies, and for picking up on the accent/cadence of someone else whose character is supposed to be American. Internet research shows that most of the main actors on the show are Canadian, go me. ;))

Kay, summing up, BSG, I need... now... *goes off to search for "other methods" of aquiring it*

And it's really amusing to read people from Vancouver's reactions to the Caprica segments ("My library is *not* a Cylon base!").

Heh, yeah. I saw the logo of the Bank of Nova Scotia, my bank, on a building, as I mentioned, and thought to myself, "Huh... guess I made the right choice, it'll be around a while*." ;)
*Assuming BSG does take place in our future, which it might not.

Peter Hewitt's the actor you're thinking of -- McKay. (8-)
Atlantis premieres here on Monday.

And I think it's great that McKay calls it Zed-Pee-Emm. :D Carter's smarter than he is though.
I didn't read your BSG stuff because it's on my Tivo for viewing tomorrow. I picked up the repeat at 1am because I also wanted to record Monk which overlaps with it. Actually, the only thing I DID watch last night was SG-1. Next Friday the Tivo might overheat...;)

I had completely forgotten that Monk is on on Fridays. It's a really fun show, I just never remember to watch it unless they're doing a marathon or something. Hmm...I'll have to figure out when Monk repeats so I can start DVRing it then.
And yeah, the Tivo is going to be toasty, since you're going to have to start it at 7 on SciFi (http://scifi.com/firefly/), right? ;)

My impression on the computer stuff was that Gaeta had set-up a bunch of dummy programs to keep the Cylons occupied between firewalls. Would make more sense than leaving random functions unprotected. Then again, it is TV show, so I'll give it some creative liberties.
As for past Adama... I wasn't really sure if that was busy screaming "OMG WW2 French officer!" or "OMG porn star!". Perhaps a combination of the two, "OMG WW2 French officer moonlighting as a porn star!".
Agreed on the teaser... I said aloud, "Where's the fleet?" just seconds before Tigh said the same thing... lol.
Finally, how come no one bothered to check on that Cylon ship that crashed? I mean, come on! Suspicious new boat, no explosion and no fire on impact! That should have been a biiig red flag to Galactica's crew, but then again, we already know that part of the point of this show is that these guys are NOT the best of the best.
Whatever. 'Tis a fun ride no matter what. ;)

I guess it bugs me because previously they've stayed with reasonably plausible computer-related stuff (biological robots aside ;)), and I can't find a way to make this make sense.
Re the apathy towards the crashed ship: I read a post somewhere with a good point about this -- they'd had other hits and there were parts of the ship that were on fire. They probably haven't even considered that it could be a boarding party....that's just something that doesn't really happen with big naval ships, at least with people, since it's pretty much a suicide mission and probably pretty likely to fail. (It works for the Cylons though, cause they don't care about dying, and they aren't in a giant hurry since they really could finish off the Colonials whenever they get around to it.) Plus, the episode ended just a few minutes after they'd gotten back to the fleet. And Tigh was pretty distracted.
There's also another thing... After someone pointed it out, I went back and rewatched the firewall scene, and I noticed 2 things.
1) The computers networked were FTL, navcom, fire control, and damage control.
2) Just as Gaeta is pulling out the network cables, the computers all go red. That could be just the system showing a false reading as it's being forcibly terminated, but.... it'll be interesting to see where they go with that. (Good lord, can you imagine how pissed off Adama will be if his computers were compromised after being networked behind his back?)
If that does end up meaning the computers are hacked, the damage control system may be giving false readings, and they're all probably busy enough to have forgotten Lee talking about this one specific ship.
Definitely a fun ride. ;)

Yeah, that explaination makes sense, now that I think about how that scene played out again, it was emphasized more for the audience than the crew. Plus, it was just one event in the chaos, and easy for Tigh to overlook, especially with how half his mind was still worrying about Adama, as he obviously does not want the command. Interestingly, though, I think that while Tigh may not want it, when he is in charge, and manages to pull himself together, he's almost as good of a Commander as Adama himself.
I noticed 2) myself, but just attributed it to it being a false reading. However, the idea of the Cylons did cross my mind... that would be a double-whammy with the boarding party aboard.

I thought it was tense and exciting and hopeless all at once. The tease of the upcoming show always had a lot of "holy shit" moments for me. Oh well.
As for the jargon, I listened to Ron Moore's podcast about 201. He basically saud that he's not a huge fan of all that fake scientific stuff, but that in some cases its necessary as implausible as it may be. You should listen to it if you like the behind the scenes/creative process details. There are quite a few spoilers though.
I love this show. It can go so many different directions. Most of all, I hope it never loses its edge.
Re: bsg
Oh, I love behind the scenes and creative stuff. I watch DVD commentaries religiously. But I'm trying to stay spoiler-free, so I'll probably wait to listen to the podcasts for a while.
I do get the point about the jargon. I mean, really, if the big thing I have to complain about is that the computer terms they're using aren't exactly correct, they're doing okay. Heck, I'm glad they're making an attempt to keep it close to realistic, rather than having the computer be a mysterious magic box that can do anything like on CSI (or Star Trek *g,d,r*).
Is it Friday yet? ;)
