Taking a break from homework for more random BSG thoughts:
I love Doc Cottle. He does need some more depth to his character (so far the only unusual thing about him is he smokes, other than that, we have he's a crotchety doctor. shocking.), but I love what's already there.
I also discovered near the end of the episode that I like Tyrol more than I thought I did. The Cylons were shooting at everyone, but I really only started worrying when he got hit. The last couple of episodes, I was a little annoyed with the writers because I thought they were laying it on a bit too thick that HE'S MORE COMPETENT THAN CRASHDOWN! But I sure worried about him this week. The bit at the very end amused and surprised me (and that was a very awesome "that worked?!" expression he made when the Cylons exploded), but then I've never seen Saving Private Ryan, which everyone else seemed to be complaining that it was ripping off.
Oh my lord, is Tigh the crappiest leader ever. He uses personal vendettas as the bases for his decisionmaking, he gets wasted on the job, he treats speculation as truth, and the worst part is he knows he's in over his head. Pretty much the only thing he did right was allowing Apollo to organize and carry out the search-and-rescue, and probably he was hoping Apollo would get caught in some gunplay and be out of his hair. (I don't really think he had a choice in actually letting him do it though, cause it was very clear after he randomly came after Apollo that pretty much everyone there thought he was in the wrong. I think even Tigh realizes he's close to losing the crew, even if he can call on the ghost of Adama to lend himself credibility.)
Well, I'll amend that a bit and say that Tigh's not a bad leader of soldiers, particularly during a crisis, but he's awful at leading people. Putting himself in charge of the whole fleet was spectacularly dumb, both because he had no real reason to, and because he is going to screw things up so bad. Adama really is going to have to deal with him whenever he wakes up.
I also have to say that I love where they're going this season with the stuff on Galactica (as opposed to the other storylines). Each week makes sense to me as an extension of the previous, and they're hitting all the bases on what I'm wondering about as it plays out. Why hasn't the Council got involved here? Check. And this is going to have to have an effect on the other ships, isn't it? Next week, check. Isn't Zarek going to make a power play? Hinted at, check.
I'm glad the Kobol plot has wrapped up. It was the least interesting of the three to me, and we're obviously going to be coming back to it eventually, so I don't mind any loose threads there.
Plus, this means we get to have Baltar, who is becoming more and more obviously unhinged, return to Galactica to be thrust into a leadership position. Is he going to do what Baltar of last season would do and try to get the Prez out cause he doesn't want that responsibility? Or is he going to try to keep it, the better to oppose Adama and save his imaginary evil robot baby? And if the latter is the case, will Zarek and Baltar throw in together to try to discredit both the Prez and Adama?
Next week: riots! Yay!
It's really weird (and also awesome) to get to see Firefly again on TV, even if Scifi has for no apparent reason decided to air it fullscreen (yeah, you know that shot with Mal and Simon on the catwalk from the pilot? It was just Simon and the catwalk on Friday with the disembodied voice of Mal) and has somehow screwed up the sound so that the sound effects and the score are turned up and all the voices are muffled.
They also showed the new Serenity trailer, which is much better than the first US one, but I like the international one best, I think. They did include one of my favorite exchanges from the movie in this one though, so yay for that. ;)
I do also appreciate that this second US one didn't namedrop Joss Whedon or Buffy. The movie is good on its own merits. Plus, I think it's smart marketing. A lot of people are prejudiced against Joss or Buffy (or don't have any idea what they are, or don't care), so not mentioning either of those allows them to be open-minded. And all the stories about the movie going to be mentioning Joss, plus I think the news has percolated around the fan groups reasonably well, so people who would want to see it based on the connection will have plenty of opportunities to find out about it if they haven't already.
I hope Universal starts cranking up the marketing machine for this soon. What they've done so far has been good (and it makes me happy to finally see a marketing campaign for something I like that isn't totally incompetent), there just needs to start being more.
(And I do think I can see the cogs starting to turn, so more yay.)
I am very happy with Fox for starting to have two-hour blocks of Arrested Development on Friday, cause that fits exactly in between Firefly and BSG. I had seen a couple of these episodes already, but I had missed most of the first season, and I think I saw these out of order.
Also, Charlie Brown Christmas music. Hee.

Date: 2005-08-01 07:10 pm (UTC)Firefly gets compared to Bebop a lot; I guess that's the closest similar pop culture reference point, and they have some similar tone and thematic bits. It works for me, since I like both of them. (The other one I've heard that I like is that Firefly is like Star Wars if it was about Han Solo.)
IMDB tells me that the actress who plays Kaylee (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0821612/) was in Fast Forward. I must have watched it too cause I remember the show title positively and I used to watch the Disney Channel a lot, but I remember nothing about it other than the title. Weirdness.
There are 14 episodes of Firefly (the two that were on last Friday count as 1 -- those were the two hours of the pilot). Basically most of the main story arcs that you saw in the pilot are left unresolved by the last episode. The movie ties up a few of those loose threads, but there's still a lot of stuff left unexplained. They really want the movie to do well so that they can do more with the story.
(At the moment, it seems likely that if the movie does well and they can go on, it'll be in more movies. Fox Network still owns the TV rights for any new episodes for the next few years at least, and Joss has said categorically that he won't go back to them. And even though those rights aren't making money for Fox, the likelihood of them selling is apparently very slim.)
Er, yeah. Bet you weren't expecting this long of a reply. ;)
